The aircraft, scheduled to join the new airline’s fleet in 2010 will now be rescheduled for delivery in 2011 and 2012. There has been no change to the planned delivery of VA’s 7th aircraft, due in the second half of 2010.
The company said the extension of the delivery schedule for VA’s new aircraft was a prudent action in the current operating environment and is part of Virgin Blue’s ongoing group-wide measures to adjust its business operations to current and forecast trading conditions. The first of VA’s aircraft was secured via a lease arrangement with leading global lessor, International Leasing Finance Company (ILFC). VA’s second and third B777-300ER aircraft, bought directly from Boeing, were delivered in January and February, respectively; with the fourth scheduled for delivery in Q3 2009.
Further to the deferral arrangement reached with Boeing regarding delivery of 777-300ER aircraft, the Virgin Blue Group has also exercised purchase rights for a further five new 737-800 aircraft as part of the company’s fleet renewal programme. The new aircraft will replace leased aircraft returns. Multi award winning airline Virgin Blue and international carriers V Australia, Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue operate a fleet of modern Boeing 737, Boeing 777 and Embraer E-Jet aircraft flying to 28 Australian and 13 international destinations including Los Angeles, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, Bali and the Solomon Islands. Australia's newest international airline, V Australia, launched flights between Sydney and Los Angeles in February 2009; between Brisbane and LA in April 2009 and flights between Melbourne and Los Angeles are planned to launch later this year Virgin Blue was the first airline in the world to launch a Government-certified carbon offset program, where Guests can offset the carbon emissions from their flights.
