Ultra low cost carrier Spirit Airlines has resumed service to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Regular passenger service had been suspended following the massive earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010.
“We couldn’t have been more eager to resume service and are thrilled to once again liberate Haiti from high fares,” says President and CEO Ben Baldanza. “Often times, people use disasters to take advantage of other's misfortune and profit through exploitation. We are happy to continue offering the ultra low fares that our friends and families in Haiti have come to know and love.”
Spirit currently has a $65.71* one-way, seven-day advance purchase fare on any available future travel dates between Fort Lauderdale and Port-au-Prince available for purchase through March 10, 2010.
Since Spirit Airlines started flying to Haiti in 2007, it has lowered fares over 40 percent, saving Haitians over $10 million.**
Spirit’s highest fares are less than the lowest fares of other airlines flying to Port-au-Prince from South Florida. For example, Spirit’s maximum fare today after FPT (see attached press release on Fuel Pass Through) is $160.71 each way, which is substantially lower than fares found on another airline’s website of over $480 each way.
Spirit’s daily service departs Fort Lauderdale at 9:45 am and arrives in Port-au-Prince at 11:45 am. The return flight departs Port-au-Prince at 12:45 pm and arrives in Fort Lauderdale at 2:48 pm.
Since the earthquake hit, Spirit has dedicated staff and aircraft to assisting with the humanitarian aid relief efforts for the Haitian community, including donating over $250,000 in flights full of supplies. In addition, the airline gave 5,000 FREE Spirit miles to everyone who donated at least $5 to the Red Cross, UNICEF or Yéle Haiti (enough miles for a free flight), which resulted in raising over $210,000 for the American Red Cross, UNICEF and Yéle Haiti. Spirit also pledged $75 to Yéle Haiti for every qualified person who applied for and used its FREE SPIRIT™ MasterCard.
