Mediation dates set for teamsters and Southwest Airlines stock clerks
The Southwest Airlines (SWA) stock clerks represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Southwest Airlines will be entering mediation on Aug. 9 for their initial two-day session.

The current eight-year agreement was amendable on Aug. 16, 2008 and negotiations began in September 2008. In February of this year, the stock clerks overwhelmingly voted down the tentative agreement because it did not meet their expectations in the areas of job security, outsourcing of work and economic parity with other Southwest Airlines employees. Southwest Airlines has reported a profit a record 37 years.

"The 160 stock clerks at SWA are an instrumental part of the maintenance operation and need to be recognized and compensated as well as ground operations," said Teamsters Airline Division Representative Dan Smith.

The stock clerks are responsible for shipping, receiving and inventorying aircraft parts, ground equipment parts and hazardous materials.

Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.4 million hardworking women and men in the United States and Canada.
