Overview - niki Niki – LCC pioneer facing tough competition Niki is one of the best known, smaller LCCs in Europe, thanks to its principal shareholder, former F1 hero and iconic airline executive Niki Lauda. Niki is also a leading player of European LCC consolidation, through its cooperation with fellow budget carrier, Air Berlin. The Vienna-based carrier was one of the first to marshal the powers of collaboration when it sold a 24% stake to German LCC, Air Berlin, in Jan-04, with which it staged a joint order for 70 A320s. Niki will take ten of the narrowbodies, trebling in size its current fleet of four A320s and an A321. The airline, which offers a stylish service, including complimentary food and drinks served by flight attendants in silver uniforms, serves a mix of holiday and business destinations. The latter portfolio includes London, Paris and Zurich. It complements its revenue by conducting charter services to European and Egyptian resort airports on behalf of local tour operator, Neckermann Reisen. Some challenges to address The imminent acquisition of new aircraft will give it the scale it has been missing, but will solve problems related to the relatively small size of the Vienna market and the proximity of Bratislava, Slovakia, home to fast-charging (and lower cost) rival SkyEurope. Less than an hours drive from Vienna, the Slovak capitals airport – and its home carrier – siphons a significant portion of traffic from Austria.
