Overview - FlyAsiaXpress FAX, a private company launched in Aug-06, was founded when AirAsia subcontracted the Government-subsidised Rural Air Service routes serviced by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) in east Malaysia. Owned by Tony Fernandes and fellow AirAsia investors Kamarudin bin Meranun and Raja Mohd Azmi, the carrier operates a fleet of seven F50s and five Twin Otters in connecting the sparsely populated outlying areas with Malaysia's political and economic centres. Such smaller aircraft are ideal for rural airports and landing strips not equipped to accommodate larger jet aircraft. While not a traditional LCC, FAX has adopted some of AirAsia's practices in order to reduce cost such as Internet and phone booking, as well as ticketless check-in systems. The airline has also integrated dynamic pricing strategies aimed at attracting different market segments. Through more commercial operations (aided by connections into AirAsia's regional services), FAX has managed its smaller fleet to provide the same service levels to the 22 east Malaysian airports as MAS did, reducing the size of the Government's outlay. It intends to introduce service to international destinations in the not-too-distant future under the name of AirAsia X.
