A320 on order 20

Overview - Interjet

Interjet began domestic services from its Toluca base on 01-Dec-05 with a fleet of three leased A320-200s after a 12-month planning period. Interjet operates a point-to-point network from Toluca Airport, located some 50 kilometres outside Mexico City, using seven ex-Volare A320s. Having only recently celebrated its first anniversary of scheduled services in the Mexican domestic market, Interjet has carried more than one million passengers.

The Mexican LCC placed an order for ten A320s plus ten options at the Paris Air Show in Jun-05. In Dec-06, a year after its inaugural flight, Interjet signed a contract with Airbus for the acquisition of ten additional A320s, converting their options into a firm order. Interjet will begin taking delivery of the A320s in the second quarter of 2007 and expects to take delivery of four aircraft each year through to 2011.

Interjet President, Miguel Aleman Magnani, has claimed "It was Interjet who introduced the low-fares air transport services concept in the Mexican industry, whilst preserving the highest standards of service quality and security for travellers on domestic routes in Mexico”.

The carrier avoids Mexico City International Airport because it is considered too congested for the quick-turn, high-utilisation operation the airline aims to create. The carrier's aircraft are configured for 150 seats and the single-class cabin offers passengers a generous 34-inch pitch. Despite the fact that in Mexico, 85% of tickets are sold through travel agents, Interjet distributes via the Internet, a call center and selected airport and city ticket locations. Interjet’s CEO, Jose Luis Graza Alvarez, has described Interjet as a "tropicalized LCC, offering a superior product at a much lower price."
