Bullish AirAsia targets 24 million passengers in 2009

MALAYSIA : AirAsia remains bullish about its performance in 2009 as passengers increasingly choose LCCs over full service carriers during the economic downturn. The LCC forecasts it will handle 24 million passengers in 2009, and 60 million passengers p/a by 2013, compared to 18.3 million in 2008. The LCC also forecasts a 21% increase in passenger traffic for 2Q2009, matching its rise in passenger traffic in 1Q2009. According to IATA, international passenger traffic (RPKs) in the Asia-Pacific region fell 8.6% year-on-year in Apr-2009.

MALAYSIA : AirAsia transported 3.1 million passengers in the three months ended 31-Mar-09 (1Q09), representing a 21% year-on-year increase. Also in the first quarter, traffic (RPKs) increased 17% year-on-year (indicating a shift to more shorter-haul flying by passengers), on a 19% capacity (ASKs) increase, resulting in a load factor reduction of 2.4 ppts to 69.7%. This was AirAsia’s lowest load factor in over two years.

AirAsia widens China network with route to Haikou

MALAYSIA : AirAsia held a press conference in Haikou to mark the launch of its latest route from Kuala Lumpur to the capital of Hainan Province on 13-Jun-08. AirAsia was the first airline to offer daily direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Haikou. Since the launch of the route, AirAsia has recorded high demands for the new route and reported a 100% load factor for the inaugural flight which commenced on 22-May-08. AirAsia’s load factor for this route in May was 78%, which is quite strong for a new sector which was previously not served by any airlines.

MALAYSIA : (XFN Asia) CIMB Research stated it is downgrading low-cost carrier, AirAsia Bhd, to neutral from outperform as its valuation will likely be capped low, given the carrier's significant exposure to risky fuel derivatives. CIMB has cut its target price for AirAsia to MYR1.65 from MYR2.88.
